Musical Musings

Music is the language of the heart, a universal language that speaks to all people, going places where words alone will not penetrate. It is also the language of the mind. By using the power of music and the innate responsiveness to it that God has built into our beings we can meet people at their point of need with messages that have the power to heal.

Music is rejuvenating life force with a reason according to me, it’s not an enjoyment activity, and it can be used as an enjoyment activity for a good cause. Music is beyond cultures, barriers, force or tradition; it is beyond the unimaginable level. It’s the inner peace or bliss that one attains.

Music is a road that is absolutely clear direct route for a deep prayer or meditation: it may be a little longer, but it is quite clear of obstacles. If one can play soulful music or hear soulful music, the power of his own meditation increases. Soulful music always adds to our aspiration. Soulful music is the music that immediately elevates our consciousness to the Absolute, to the Highest. Soulful music is the music that wants to eventually transform our consciousness. It carries us into the Universal Consciousness and makes us feel that we are in tune with the highest, with the deepest, with the farthest. It also makes us feel that God Himself is the Supreme Musician. When we play soulful music, we come to realize that we are not the musician; we are just an instrument. We are like a piano, violin or guitar, and it is God who is constantly playing on us. If we really play soulful music, we will see that we are just an instrument, that somebody else is singing and playing in and through us, and that somebody is our Inner Pilot, the Supreme. God is the Supreme Musician. The music that God originally created is the music of the soul.

Music is the universal Body of the Supreme. If music is taken away from God, then God's Body is taken. Now if the body is gone, the soul is useless. Similarly, the body without the soul is of no help. The body we need for manifestation and the soul we need for realization. It is like the instrument and the musician. Without the instrument how can anything be played? The musician will remain alone as an individual, unmanifested. And if there is no musician, who will play on the instrument? Both are supremely necessary.

The fifth chakra is the throat centre. It is called the vishuddha or kantha chakra. The Sanskrit word for throat is 'kantha'. Like the other chakras, vishuddha is inside the subtle body, inside the subtle physical and not in the gross physical.

When one opens this chakra, one is bound to create things. One can be a writer, one can be a singer, one can be a dancer. When this chakra is opened, it means that one has established a free access to the world of creativity. This centre has a special connection with the universal music. This universal music is totally different from the music that we play or hear. This music is celestial; we can't express it. We hear this music inside the heart centre, anahata. Our ordinary human ears can't hear it; with our inner ear we hear that music.

Next to real spirituality is music, soulful songs; and after that comes poetry. Poetry is also very close to spirituality, but when it is a matter of setting up an order, first comes singing or playing on an instrument and then comes poetry. If we sing soulful songs-not rock and roll and so forth- then we are really adding to our aspiration.

We cannot meditate twenty-four hours day, or even sixteen hours or eight hours; it is impossible for ordinary human beings like us. But if we are asked to sing, even if we are very bad singers, without difficulty we can sing for three or four hours a day. There are few unfortunate ones who cannot sing; but God, the Supreme, will utilize them in other ways, so they don't have to worry. If you can sing one song soulfully every day, it will definitely help you in your spiritual life. Singing is like a forgotten or lost wealth coming back to us.

I REMAIN a spiritual seeker with a little musical knowledge and am striving for more perfection towards the Ultimate Goal...
